Job Description

The New York Times Opinion department seeks a Design Director to work with editors and visual teams to distinguish its coverage across all platforms. The role involves hands-on design and art direction, managing a team, and contributing to the broader design community. The position is based in New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with editors to build a shared vision
  • Oversee art direction of daily and weekly opinion reports
  • Oversee design of print executions
  • Collaborate with digital teams on design execution
  • Infuse creative teams with support
  • Identify and produce visually-driven story ideas
  • Translate visuals across all mediums
  • Recruit and direct work from outside artists
  • Manage budgets
  • Demonstrate support for the mission

Requirements

  • 7+ years of operational design experience in print
  • 3+ years of experience managing designers
  • Experience with design fundamentals across platforms
  • Knowledge of design software
  • Relationships with illustrators and photographers
  • Experience shaping editorial content
  • Experience communicating visual ideas
  • Portfolio of extraordinary design capabilities
