Job Description

The New York Times is seeking a temporary Senior Video Journalist to develop and produce video-first news podcasts for mobile, social, and digital audiences. This role involves pitching and shaping podcast episodes, managing production, researching stories, writing scripts, and generating questions for the host. The ideal candidate will have a strong news sense, story framing skills, and a refined understanding of production and editing techniques in multi-camera environments.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and produce podcast episodes videos in horizontal and vertical formats
  • Oversee the work of cinematographers and editors
  • Work closely with newsroom audio editors and producers to guard standards
  • Collaborate with newsroom social and video team to ensure smooth production timelines and delivery, including pitching posts for social team and writing captions
  • Handle the pressure of newsroom deadlines and juggle multiple projects
  • Experiment with new ideas
  • Support the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Requirements

  • 8+ years of journalism experience in digital video or a broadcast newsroom
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to synthesize news gathering into engaging video
  • Extensive professional experience in all aspects of the video production process
  • Strong organizational skills to supervise video journalists, schedules, direct field crews, and manage freelancers
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Experience working in video podcasts (Preferred)
  • Interest in politics and national and international news (Preferred)
  • General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals (Preferred)
  • Ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines (Preferred)
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed (Preferred)
